Formula Renault BARC is the most affordable and cost-effective way of racing a state-of-the-art Formula Renault car; the championship priding itself on being able to bridge the gap between club-level racing and national-level motorsport.

Originally, Formula Renault BARC was a highly successful club series for both young, up and coming career-minded racers and seasoned gentleman drivers, competing in multi-chassis Formula Renault cars as raced in the full Formula Renault UK series in the 1990s.

But in 2005, Renault UK chose to put its weight behind the championship and, at the same time, introduce the world’s most successful junior single-seater, the FR 2.0, into Formula Renault BARC.

To all intents and purposes, the FR 2.0 seen in Formula Renault BARC is identical to the cars utilised in Formula Renault UK but there are two key differences – the BARC cars use fixed gear ratios and also feature engine restrictors, reducing lap times slightly in comparison to the full UK series.

Formula Renault BARC, which continues to be run by the Hampshire-based British Automobile Racing Club, has two classes – FR2000, for the current FR 2.0 car, and Club Class, for the ageing multi-chassis Formula Renaults.

Russell Racing’s own Matt Russell became Vice-Champion of the Formula Renault BARC FR2000 Class in 2005, while the team enjoyed podium success with BRDC 'Rising Star' Matt Shawyer in 2006.

Formula Renault UK, meanwhile, is the most high-profile national, junior single-seater series in the country and the championship has played a role in the careers of some of the biggest names in global motorsport.

Reigning FIA Formula One World Champion Kimi Raikkonen won the 2000 Formula Renault UK title and 2007 F1 runner-up Lewis Hamilton claimed the crown in 2003.

Alongside its current Formula Renault BARC commitments, Russell Racing also plans to make a return to Formula Renault UK.
